Churchill once said, "People shape organizations, but once those organizations take form, they, in turn, begin to shape us." Indeed, Master Zhao Shuilin from the company's Equipment Factory has dedicated his youth to embodying the Hangchi spirit of dedication and loyalty. Today, the Skills Master Workshop named after him has, since its establishment, nurtured countless skilled craftsmen under his leadership—and recently, it even clinched first place in the company’s recent bench-making skills competition.
Currently, the equipment factory has approximately 30 machinists, who are responsible for equipment maintenance across the company's various branches as well as machining tasks within the factory itself. Depending on their specific job responsibilities, machinists are typically categorized into two main types: general machinists and specialized machinists. The fundamental skills of a machinist encompass a wide range of tasks, including marking out, assembly, repair work, handling measuring tools and specialized instruments, trimming, filing, scraping, drilling pilot holes, reaming, countersinking, tapping, threading, grinding, correcting deformations, bending materials, riveting, assembling and adjusting machinery, and performing equipment repairs. Moreover, these roles demand a seamless blend of proficient mechanical operation and precise manual dexterity. As a result, mastering the diverse skills required for this versatile role often takes significantly longer—typically 5 to 8 years—before a machinist can independently handle complex tasks. Meanwhile, as the company continues to grow and expand, high-precision equipment is now widely deployed across all branches, raising the bar even higher for the skill level expected from our machinists.
Without rules, there can be no order or perfection. Skill master Zhao Shuilin has set clear work goals and requirements for the studio members: each person must achieve at least two accomplishments annually; he regularly takes apprentices to the workshop site for lectures and skill-demonstration sessions; studio members are expected to participate in training sessions involving five or more people each week, with every individual undergoing two skill-training sessions per month. Additionally, the studio plans to hold regular technical exchange meetings—among other objectives and guidelines—to ensure that the mentorship, assistance, and hands-on guidance programs proceed smoothly and effectively. As the leader of the studio, Zhao Shuilin frequently visits the workshop site to provide on-the-spot guidance. He places special emphasis on explaining and demonstrating solutions to particularly representative repair cases, while also addressing the challenge of having a dispersed workforce of toolmakers, which made centralized training difficult. "As long as young workers are eager to learn skills," Zhao emphasizes, "I’m committed to sharing all my accumulated experience with them—and even going above and beyond by providing every possible resource to help them master their craft." Yet in today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving era, it’s increasingly rare to find young employees who can truly settle down, dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to mastering their skills, and patiently embrace the learning process. After all, the current generation of youth is shaped by an age that fosters vibrant, dynamic thinking and diverse, fluid lifestyles. Therefore, Master Zhao not only focuses on imparting technical expertise but also pays close attention to the evolving mindset of young workers. He constantly reminds them of the importance of acquiring skills, fostering an environment where learning and skill development thrive. Moreover, during routine training sessions, he stresses repetition—encouraging frequent practice and hands-on application. To reinforce learning, he also organizes small-scale, targeted assessments regularly, challenging his apprentices to think critically and independently explore solutions on their own.
As the saying goes, "No pain, no gain." Recently, the machinists from the Equipment Factory virtually swept the top eight spots in the company's skills competition—thanks in no small part to Zhao Shuilin's dedicated training and guidance of the machining team. Reflecting on the impressive achievements of his team members, Zhao Shuilin humbly emphasized that mastering technical skills ultimately depends on an individual's own initiative and determination. Indeed, these outstanding results are closely tied to the contestants' unwavering commitment to diligently honing their craft—a habit that has become second nature to them over time. Moreover, it’s worth noting that the competition tasks this time were relatively basic compared to the daily work challenges faced by the machinists. This highlights the need for continuous refinement and practice, as true expertise in machining requires relentless effort and precision—something that can only be achieved through repeated, hands-on experience. Looking ahead, while the competition revealed some areas where certain employees still lag behind, the Skills Master Workshop has already identified this as a key focus for future training. Moving forward, the workshop will prioritize teaching advanced scraping techniques to the team, as mastering this skill is crucial for achieving the kind of precision that machine tools alone simply cannot deliver.
As the saying goes, "With great effort, even an iron rod can be ground into a needle." Before the company's machinist skills competition, members of the Skills Master Workshop tailored personalized training plans for each contestant, providing them with all the necessary materials, tools, and practice facilities. Additionally, every participant was paired with a dedicated technician for pre-competition guidance. This intensely focused preparation environment fueled the contestants' determination to excel—especially Jiang Kaiwei, who secured second place in the competition. Despite his busy schedule, Kaiwei carved out 4 to 5 hours each day for targeted practice. As a result, this post-90s competitor truly shone during the event. Reflecting on his experience, Jiang Kaiwei shared: "It’s this vibrant, learning-oriented atmosphere at work that has enabled me to grow rapidly, helping me address my personal skill gaps and ultimately elevating my overall proficiency as a machinist."
Master Zhao Shuilin excels in no fewer than 22 skills, including machine assembly and debugging, as well as equipment maintenance. From the moment he joined the factory, he’s been inseparable from tools like wrenches and hammers, dedicating 44 years steadfastly to his role as a skilled machinist. Even at the age of 62, enjoying the freedom of retirement, he continues to work tirelessly on the production floor. A true national master of machining skills, Zhao Shuilin remains deeply committed to his craft, fueled by a passionate and sincere dedication. The display board hanging in Zhao Shuilin’s Skill Master Workshop clearly outlines the workshop’s ambitious talent-development goals. Among the workshop members are renowned figures such as Senior Technician Lu Lijun, who has earned accolades like second place in Zhejiang Province’s Machinist Competition, along with other distinguished professionals—including Senior Technicians Hu Zucan, Shen Guanxiang, and Chen Mingwen. Such an impressive and inspiring team is undoubtedly poised to guide generations of young technicians forward. Zhao Shuilin firmly believes, “Together with the members of the Skill Master Workshop, I will diligently pass on my expertise, foster continuous learning, embrace innovation, and ensure that our team of machinists has ample room to grow.”
The award-winning contestant, Jiang Kaiwei, who represented the team at this competition, said: "My second-place finish shouldn’t be credited to myself—it’s actually a testament to the guidance and mentorship of my instructors. Working in a positive, uplifting environment with a strong culture of learning, I was able to stand firm thanks to this incredibly talented group." These humble yet profound words perfectly echo Ostrovsky’s insight: "Anyone who believes themselves to be a saint or a hidden genius—and isolates themselves from the collective—will inevitably face a tragic fate. After all, it is the collective that constantly elevates you, helping you gain confidence and stability." Indeed, the power and influence of a team cannot be underestimated.
