On May 16, 2014, the China Machinery Industry Federation organized and convened in Hangzhou the project acceptance meeting for the "Key Basic Components and General Parts" project—specifically the "Research and Application of Key Technologies for Lightweight Gearboxes"—under the "12th Five-Year" National Science and Technology Support Program. The project was undertaken by four organizations, including HAGG. Feng Guang, General Manager of the Group Company, along with other leaders, attended the meeting.
At the meeting, Professor-level Senior Engineer Liu Weihui, the project leader, presented the project's research report and financial audit report to the expert panel. The panel reviewed the relevant documents and conducted an on-site inspection. After thorough questioning and discussion, they concluded that the project was well-organized and managed according to standard procedures, with complete and comprehensive acceptance documentation. Moreover, the project's funds were used reasonably overall, and the team successfully completed all the research tasks and performance indicators outlined in the project proposal, achieving the expected objectives. As a result, the expert panel unanimously agreed to approve the project for final acceptance.
The research project titled "Key Technologies for Lightweighting Gearboxes and Their Applications," which spanned three years, focused on reducing the weight of high-performance ship and heavy-duty equipment gearboxes, such as those used in lifting machinery. The project encompassed innovative design of involute arc-toothed gear meshing pairs, optimized transmission schemes and structural designs for large-scale, heavy-duty gearboxes, dynamic performance analysis coupled with vibration and noise control, as well as efficient gear manufacturing and shot peening strengthening technologies. A pilot-scale testing facility was established, enabling the development of independently designed and manufactured lightweight, high-power, heavy-duty ship gearboxes and port crane gearboxes. The facility now boasts an annual production capacity of 400 sets of high-power marine gearboxes and 20,000 sets of crane gearboxes, successfully achieving mass production. Additionally, a demonstration application of the newly developed involute arc-toothed gears has been completed, and the first domestically produced face-gear measuring instrument capable of precision level-5 inspections has been successfully developed. Through these efforts, the project has also cultivated integrated service capabilities for high-performance ships and heavy-duty port lifting machinery, facilitating the industrialization and commercialization of its groundbreaking achievements. Notably, the lightweight gearbox products have already been deployed in fields such as high-performance vessels and heavy-duty port cranes, proving their practical value and reliability.
The project has achieved breakthroughs in several key areas, including structural optimization of high-power marine gearboxes and port crane gearboxes, precision machining of double-helical gears without undercutting slots, the design and manufacturing of novel curved-bevel gears, as well as advanced measurement techniques and instrumentation for face gears. The team has filed 14 patent applications (including 9 invention patents), with 5 patents already granted. Additionally, the project has contributed to the development of 1 international technical standard, 2 industry standards, and 2 enterprise-level technical standards. To date, 38 academic papers have been published, with 8 indexed in SCI journals. Furthermore, the project has mentored 21 graduate students and cultivated a group of highly skilled professionals specializing in gear transmission technology.
