HAGG Becomes a Trailblazer in China's High-End Manufacturing

Nestled in the swirling currents of the distant English Channel, plans are underway for what will become the world's largest tidal energy project—boasting a total installed capacity of 400 MW, capable of powering over 175,000 European households. The first-phase demonstration project has already begun operations. "This tidal power gearbox, with a generating capacity of 1.5 MW, is being showcased through our very first prototype," proudly shared Feng Guang, Chairman of HAGG., to the reporter. "But what makes us even prouder is that this time, it was European companies who proactively reached out to us, eager to collaborate!"
In 2014, the astute team at Hangzhou Gear sensed a lucrative opportunity in tidal power gearbox technology. After more than a year of joint development—and incorporating several world-leading innovations such as multi-planetary flexible shafts, bearings without outer rings, and differential power-splitting systems—Hangzhou Gear successfully secured an order for tidal gearboxes in early 2015. The timely delivery of these cutting-edge gearboxes marked a significant milestone in Hangzhou Gear’s journey toward transformation and upgrading, firmly establishing the company as a true "trailblazer" in its industry.
General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out in the report to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China that we must accelerate the building of a manufacturing powerhouse, speed up the development of advanced manufacturing, promote the deep integration of the internet, big data, artificial intelligence, and the real economy, and help China's industries move toward the high-end segments of the global value chain, fostering several world-class advanced manufacturing clusters.
"Over the years, our HAGG has consistently adhered to the principles of independence, self-reliance, and self-strengthening, cultivating a high-caliber, cutting-edge talent pool. Meanwhile, our products have already earned recognition not only in Southeast Asia but also in developed countries across Europe and America," said Feng Guang.
For decades, HAGG has leveraged its robust independent R&D capabilities and talented research team, now growing into a renowned national and even global enterprise in the field of traditional gear machinery.
"The pursuit of core technology has always been the driving force behind Hangzhou Gear's mission. 'The controllable-pitch propeller propulsion system is cutting-edge equipment for ships, and China's market has historically been dominated by foreign brands. However, through relentless efforts, we've mastered the core technology,' said Feng Guang. Over nearly a decade of dedicated work—combining technology transfer with continuous innovation and refinement—HAGG has successfully developed three distinct series of controllable-pitch propeller products. Notably, one of these series operates at a remarkably low working pressure of just 6 MPa, making it the world's lowest-pressure controllable-pitch propulsion system currently available. This advanced hydraulic design significantly minimizes the risk of internal oil leakage. The HS-series controllable-pitch propulsion system has even earned a national invention patent, firmly establishing our position in the high-end manufacturing of such systems. Additionally, the project titled 'Key Technology Research and Application of High-Power Marine Gearbox Transmission and Propulsion Systems' was honored with the 'Second-Class National Science and Technology Progress Award' in 2016.'"
Under the current "new normal," traditional manufacturing enterprises are all facing the challenge of improving quality and boosting efficiency while simultaneously forging new drivers for growth. Recognizing this, HAGG understands that simply continuing to produce conventional gearboxes will inevitably lead to obsolescence. Therefore, staying grounded in the present yet looking firmly toward the future, the company has introduced France’s adjustable-pitch propeller technology and flexible shaft differential分流 technology, enabling it to develop advanced powertrain systems such as electro-hydraulic-controlled construction machinery transmissions and high-horsepower agricultural machinery gearboxes. With continuous innovation and expansion, HAGG has evolved from a single-business enterprise focused solely on marine gearboxes into a diversified industrial powerhouse—now encompassing not only ship propulsion systems and construction machinery drivetrains, but also cutting-edge gearboxes for renewable energy applications like wind, nuclear, tidal, and wave power, as well as transmission solutions for rail transportation and agricultural machinery gearboxes.
Today, in Dajiangdong, a cutting-edge new-energy equipment flagship has already taken shape—this is the high-end new-energy equipment R&D base established by HAGG with an investment of 800 million yuan. The first phase includes a 100,000-square-meter factory building, equipped with a batch of advanced, large-scale, high-precision machining equipment procured from overseas, along with a 3-meter gear measurement center, a three-coordinate measuring machine, and heat-treatment facilities. Additionally, it features a comprehensive performance test bench capable of handling units ranging from 1,850kW to 6,000kW, enabling an annual production capacity of up to 2,000 2MW-class wind turbine gearboxes.
Currently, a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation is historically converging with the shift in China's economic development model. Standing at this pivotal moment, Hangzhou's economy continues to gain momentum, steadily advancing the integration of "two modernizations"—namely, the deep fusion of information technology and manufacturing. Leveraging its strengths in IT and advanced manufacturing, Hangzhou is setting a "Hangzhou Model" that will serve as a benchmark for China's high-end, intelligent manufacturing initiatives.
