Recently, the 2GWH9250 high-power marine gearbox, designed and manufactured by HAGG Corporation, successfully passed factory acceptance after undergoing joint evaluation and comprehensive testing by representatives from the North Sea Branch of the State Oceanic Administration, as well as experts from China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation's 701st Research Institute and 711th Research Institute.
The 2GWH9250 gearbox is currently the largest-specification twin-engine parallel-drive propulsion gearbox produced by HAGG Company. It serves as the main propulsion system for the third retrofit project of China’s renowned oceanographic research vessel, the "Dayang-1." As part of an old-vessel modernization initiative, this dual-engine parallel-drive gearbox is the ship’s most critical speed-reducing equipment. It receives power from two main engines, each delivering 2,970 kW at 500 rpm, with a gear ratio of 3.4676:1. The gearbox is designed to handle the maximum propeller thrust of 1,000 kN and also features two auxiliary power take-off (PTO) outputs, which must meet primary structural requirements. Each unit weighs approximately 37 metric tons. Given its complex product architecture, stringent reliability demands, significant design and manufacturing challenges, and tight production deadlines, this gearbox has been classified by the company as a special, high-priority product.
HAGG
The company established a dedicated task force comprising members from departments such as Technology, Quality, and Manufacturing. Closely aligned with the quality assurance guidelines outlined for this gearbox project, the task force rigorously controlled quality at every critical stage—ranging from design drawings and raw material procurement to process planning, machining, heat treatment control, and final assembly and test runs. Throughout the entire process, they maintained meticulous oversight and provided continuous tracking, successfully overcoming numerous challenges in both design and production processes. Since the primary PTO was being applied for the first time in a twin-engine parallel-drive gearbox, and given the structural constraints inherent in retrofitting older vessels, the technical center’s designers rose to the occasion. They conducted thorough technical preparations for this project, performing extensive analyses and calculations to continually refine the design. To ensure sufficient manufacturing time for future phases, they worked overtime to accelerate the design schedule, swiftly completing the entire set of engineering drawings within a remarkably short timeframe. At the same time, team members frequently visited the production site to engage in technical discussions—whether it was inspecting critical components like welded box structures or addressing customers’ specific requirements. In every step of the process, they strived for perfection, leaving no detail overlooked. Departments including the High-Power Plant, Manufacturing Division, and Quality Assurance Department all rallied together, coordinating seamlessly to successfully deliver the product’s manufacturing, assembly, and testing tasks on schedule.
The successful acceptance of the 2GWH9250 gearbox demonstrates Hangzhou Gear's mature design and manufacturing capabilities for high-power, twin-engine parallel-drive gearboxes. This achievement not only sets a strong example for Hangzhou Gear in public service vessel propulsion system projects but also further solidifies the company's leading position in the marine machinery market. Moreover, it has accumulated valuable experience for the development of future similar projects.
